A local’s guide to the best lángos in Budapest, Hungary (2024)

A local’s guide to the best lángos in Budapest, Hungary (1)

I’m sure you already know that lángos is one of the must-try Hungarian dishes in Budapest and Hungary. Budapest has hundreds of lángos places, so you must be wondering where to eat the best lángos in Budapest. I was also curious, so I went searching for the best lángos, and I tested 10+1 lángos places in Budapest. I choose these 10+1 because of their location and popularity, so you can choose between touristy locations and more hidden ones.

Note: The address, prices and opening times are also included in the post. Still, it can change anytime, especially the opening time, so check it on their sites to not miss your dreamy lángos.

What’s lángos?

Lángos is famous Hungarian street food, which is basically a fried bread dough. The basic dough is made of water (or milk), yeats, flour and salt. The yeast creates air bubbles in the dough. If it’s well kneaded and fried, the flatbread won’t be heavy and thick. Lángos is fried in oil and usually served with toppings.

For Hungarians, the most popular topping is cheese and sour cream. And an extra garlic sauce on the dough before adding the topping. My boyfriend always freaks out “Why are you eating the same every time? It’s boring!” when I choose the cheese and sour cream topping. Well, that’s my favourite because of the taste combination.

The other popular toppings are sausage, ham, onion, goat cheese and at some location, anything you can imagine. Some vendors even invented sweet lángos, which is served with Nutella or jam.

Where to eat the best lángos in Budapest?

1. Lángosh at St Stephen’s basilica

The cute little space of Lángosh is located on Zrínyi street, so you’ll have a view of St Stephen’s basilica. Unfortunately, there aren’t seats outside, but you can eat at the bar. You’ll also find a smaller bar inside, where you can also adore the cute wall decoration with blue patterned plates.

Choose from 8 salty lángos and 1 sweet flavour, which is topped with jam. Lángosh also sells hot dogs.

I went for the basic one with cheese and sour cream, and my boyfriend ate a unique lángos called Budapest with extra sausage, bacon and ham topping.

THE FRIED DOUGH WAS TASTY AND LIGHT, THANKS TO THE SOFT EDGES. Though the toppings didn’t have a dominant taste.

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese and sour cream – 999 HUF
  • Budapest lángos (bacon, sausage, ham, cheese, sour cream, paprika) – 1199 HUF

2. Retro Lángos Budapest at Arany János street

This is definitely the most famous lángos place in Budapest. Its kiosk was located at Arany János street metro station. However, when the metro line 3 renovation started in 2020, the booth had to close.

Budapest couldn’t live without Retro Lángos, so they opened a store opposite the metro station. So now you can order in the stylish interior and choose from many tables outside or inside.

Same location. Almost…

Same taste. The tasty lángos is crispy outside and fluffy inside.

SAME SELECTION, AND EVEN MORE. THE MENU CONTAINS STUFFED LÁNGOS, MOREOVER LACTOSE- AND GLUTEN-FREE LÁNGOSES. They take topping very seriously, in variations and in portions as well. I’ve previously tried their lángos topped with cheese and sour cream, so I wanted to sample something new. So I went for sour cream, ewe cheese mix, cheese, spring onion and ham topping. Unfortunately, I couldn’t feel the particular taste of ewe cheese. However, it was still tasty, and I could barely eat the sizable portion.

My boyfriend asked for four cheese lángos with sour cream, Trappist cheese, mozzarella, smoked cheese and feta on top. It wasn’t as tasty as a four-cheese pizza, but it was good.

Prices:

  • Lángos with ewe cheese, spring onion and ham – 1390 HUF
  • Lángos with four cheese – 1390 HUF

3. Lángos papa on Andrássy avenue (temporarily closed)

Lángos is supposed to be street food, though Lángos papa revised the concept and created NOT AN AVERAGE LÁNGOS PLACE ON ANDRÁSSY AVENUE. They provide cutleries, the lángos is served on an actual plate instead of a paper plate, and you can order quality wine.

There are tables on the wide pavement, covered with authentic Hungarian chequered table cloth. You can also have a seat inside if the busy avenue disturbs you. Though behind the fancy facade, the indoor area was disappointing with less authentic decoration and lousy ventilation. The waiters were friendly, but the service was slow.

Don’t expect street food prices while dining on Andrássy avenue. THESE WERE THE MOST PRICY LÁNGOSES WE’VE TRIED, THOUGH THE TASTE WAS ONE OF THE BEST!

My boyfriend ate a lángos topped with sour cream, bacon, cheese, crispy onion and onion. It was beautiful and delicious. However, I wanted to change, so I picked a filled lángos, which looked like a mix of hot dog and lángos. It wasn’t very aesthetic, though it was super tasty. Both of the lángoses were crispy outside and fluffy inside.

If you’re super hungry, a menu is also available with a starter, main course and dessert.

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese, bacon and crispy onion – 2250 HUF
  • Lángos filled with cheese and wiener – 2650 HUF
  • Soproni beer (1 pint) – 790 HUF
  • Skizo white wine (1 dl) – 950 HUF

4. Ligeti Lángos at City Park

I’d you’re wandering in City Park (Városliget), and you feel hungry for a lángos, just turn towards the area of the Zoo and Széchenyi Thermal Bath. Look for the pavilions and the brick building, which works as a lángos kiosk. There are many seating options around, though it can be busy during weekends. The park is all around you, so I’m sure you’ll find a place to eat 😛

Order at the right window and wait for your number. The potato lángos menu contains the basic options and some premium ones with unique toppings. So you won’t stay hungry after the significant portion. With the rich toppings, it might be too much for 1 person. However, you can still order some hot dogs and pancakes to share.

I’m a local, so I went for the “local’s favourite”, topped with cheese and sour cream. Yes, Hungarians usually eat this version, which totally reached my expectations. THE EDGE WAS FLUFFY AND CRISPY, THE MIDDLE PART WAS THINNER, AND IT WASN’T OILY. PERFECT COMBINATION! One of my friends went for the Hungarian lángos, which had extra sausages on top, and it was also delicious.

Prices:

  • Local’s favourite – 950 HUF
  • Hungarian lángos – 1400 HUF

5. Lángosom

Lángosom (means My lángos in English) is a cute little place with authentic Hungarian decoration. The interior is narrow, especially if people eat at the bar. But, don’t worry, you’ll find 2 small tables outside as well.

The lángos lady was very kind. She didn’t spare any toppings. FOR ME, THE LÁNGOS WASN’T THAT TASTY. IT WAS A BIT OVERCOOKED AND OILY. Though, the dough had a perfect thickness.

I went for the traditional lángos topped with cheese and sour cream. My boyfriend chose the Budapest lángos with bacon, Hungarian sausage, ham, peppers, cheese and sour cream.

They also serve pancake and cottage cheese dumplings, though, after the lángoses, we didn’t have space for dessert.

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese and sour cream – 890 HUF
  • Budapest lángos – 1190 HUF

6. Lángos Burger at Street Food Karaván

If you want to try a special lángos, visit Lángos burger at Karaván Street food (next to Szimpla). They offer a few classical versions like cheese and sour cream, sheep cheese with arugula, and grilled paprika. IF YOU WANT TO EXPERIMENT, TRY OUT ONE OF THEIR LÁNGOS BURGERS.

At festivals, we tasted the beef lángos burger, and it was so flavourful. It contains layers of sheep cheese, arugula, grilled paprika, beef and 2 lángos “buns”, of course. Unfortunately, at our latest visit to Karaván Street food, they were out of beef, so we tasted the other burgers.

The pork lángos burger was filled with sheep cheese, onion chutney, pork patty and cheese. It was tasty but not as good as the other one. The chicken lángos burger wasn’t my favourite either. The chicken patty didn’t have an intense taste, and I could only think about the beef burger.

Prices:

  • Pork lángos burger – 1990 HUF
  • Chicken lángos burger – 1990 HUF
  • Beef lángos burger – 1990 HUF

7. Drum Café Budapest, Lángos & Gulyás bár

I’ve passed by Drum Café many times, and it always looked like a touristy place for me. First of all, it’s located in Dob street in the city centre, close to Deák Ferenc square. Secondly, they display themselves as a traditional Hungarian restaurant with photos of Hungarian dishes.

Well, I didn’t have high expectations.

WE WENT THERE AROUND LUNCHTIME ON A WEEKDAY, AND IT WAS ALMOST FULL, MAINLY WITH TOURISTS. The indoor area has many tables, quite close to each other. In addition, there are tables outside, and it’s covered during the cold season to fit more people.

Drum Café has many international and traditional Hungarian dishes, including lángos and lángos burgers. The thick menu had photos to ease the ordering process.

My boyfriend ordered Extra lángos, a folded lángos filled with ham, salami, paprika, red onion, melted cheese, garlic and sour cream. I ate ham and cheese lángos. THE LÁNGOS WAS MEH… THE DOUGH WAS THICK AND HEAVY, AND IT WASN’T TASTY. They didn’t spare on the toppings, though. My boyfriend’s lángos was better because it had more fillings, so the lángos taste wasn’t that dominant.

The other dishes might be better. STILL, I WOULDN’T RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT TO EAT LÁNGOS. It didn’t have a pleasant atmosphere and the waiters weren’t so friendly. As my boyfriend said, “the underground place was much better”… (See it at point 9.)

Check out my blog post called Budapest’s best Hungarian restaurants to know where to eat traditional dishes.

8. Lángos shop at Central Market Hall

Central Market and its lángos shop are famous among tourists and locals. The corridor of the food stalls on the 1st floor was always full of people before COVID-19. However, after the travel restrictions and lack of tourists, the lángos place was almost empty in autumn 2020.

The shop offers many lángos toppings, way too many toppings! A few options are presented on the countertop as decoration. Well, not so appealing for me. Some of them are even weird. But, I guess those are made for the curious tourists, no offence…

Here, you can make a difference between locals and tourists. Locals usually ask for the “traditional” lángos topped with cheese and sour cream, and tourists ask for non-traditional toppings. You don’t have to choose everything. Instead, try to stick to the basics. BY CHOOSING LESS, YOU CAN ENJOY THE TASTE OF THE LÁNGOS, WHICH IS DELICIOUS. The lángos dough was crispy outside, fluffy inside and wasn’t oily. It was freshly made and richly topped with good quality cheese.

BE CAREFUL! THE SELLERS SEE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TOURISTS AND LOCALS. So they might offer you a more expensive lángos with weird toppings. And in 2019, standing in the long queue, waiting to order, I’ve seen tourists with their lángos and “fancy” paper trays. When I could finally order, I got my food on plain paper. I had to ask why the others got a pretty paper tray. Looks like they paid extra for it, and I’m not sure they were aware of that…

MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PRICES! DON’T BE A VICTIM OF A TOURIST SCAM!

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese and sour cream – 750 HUF

Address: 1093 Budapest, Vámház str. 1-3,, 1st floor

9. Lángosos (Krumplis lángos) at Flórián square

I tried to lower my expectations because I’ve heard from many of my friends that this place prepares the best lángos in Budapest.

Their name, Krumplis lángos means Potato lángos. The lángos dough contains potato, so they named themself after their main ingredient. I could feel a different taste, but I expected something more dominant. The dough wasn’t that crispy and thick as usual. Luckily it was as delicious as the basic ones.

I chose the usual cheese and sour cream combination again, they could have put a bit more sour cream, but it was still tasty.

My boyfriend’s lángos was so flavourful with the additional bacon and onion. The combination of the tastes really matched.

TOTALLY EXCEEDED MY EXPECTATIONS…

Its area isn’t so appealing because it’s located at the underground level of Flórián square. However, you’ll notice the lángos place quickly because there’s always a queue.

There aren’t tables and chairs to sit down, only a bar where you can eat your order. Although, you can walk to the nearby park and enjoy your lángos seated.

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese and sour cream – 720 HUF
  • Lángos with cheese, sour cream, bacon and onion – 850 HUF

Only Hungarian menu

10. Lángos Land at Fény street market (Fény utcai piac)

Fény street market has many gourmet spots and quality products. The kiosk of Lángos Land is located on the 1st floor of the market, and they offer the basic lángos types like garlic, sour cream, cheese, cheese and sour cream, smoked cheese, cabbage, cabbage and cheese and sour cream. In addition, you can ask for ham and onion as extra. All these and even more tastes are available for stuffed lángoses.

Due to COVID restrictions, restaurants and food stalls were only open for takeaway, so it wasn’t possible to taste our lángos at the market. However, during “normal” times, you can eat your lángos near Lángos Land, and it won’t look this ruined like in my photos…

We went to the nearby park, Millenáris, to eat our lángos, though it was windy and the experience wasn’t that enjoyable.

THE LÁNGOS DOUGH WAS TOO THICK FOR ME, THOUGH IT WASN’T OILY. Luckily, it had a nice amount of cheese on top but not much sour cream. It was a significant portion, but not my favourite one…

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese and sour cream – 850 HUF
  • Lángos with smoked cheese and sour cream – 900 HUF

Only Hungarian menu

10+1. Álomlángos in Szentendre

Szentendre is located north of Budapest, and it’s a popular day-trip destination from Budapest. If you’re heading to Szentendre and didn’t have a chance to try out lángos in Budapest, make sure to stop by at Álomlángos (Dream lángos).

Approach Álomlángos from the main square (Fő tér). You’ll find a narrow alley next to Levendula ice cream shop and from there, just follow the yellow lángos sign up on the picturesque path. Don’t be surprised if there’s a queue on the way that means you’ve found Álomlángos. Finally, you’ll get into a small yard, and you can order delicious lángos. The basic topping and a few extra toppings are available, and you can also choose stuffed lángos. Hungarian pancakes are also part of the menu.

We, Hungarians, went for the traditional one, topped with cheese and sour cream. THE DOUGH WAS FLUFFY AT THE EDGES, THIN AT THE MIDDLE, AND THE CHEESE AND SOUR CREAM PROPORTIONS WERE PERFECT. No surprise why the crowd was waiting for these lángos, super tasty 😛

In the yard, there are only a few tables. If you don’t find any empty tables, don’t worry. Just continue your way up on the alley, and there you can have a lángos with a view.

Prices:

  • Lángos with cheese and sour cream – 880 HUF
  • Pancake with cottage cheese – 300 HUF

To summarise the article, you can eat flavourful lángoses almost everywhere. I’ve found only one lángos I didn’t like, and it was in Drum Café. The others were all tasty, and my favourites were Retró Lángos Budapest, Lángosos (Krumplis lángos), Lángos Papa and Ligeti Lángos.

I have to highlight that not only these 10+1 lángos places are in Budapest, I think there’s like a hundred places where you can eat lángos. I visited these ones because of their “fame”.
