Can I wear an orthotic insole in one shoe? - Podiatry and Foot Pain Community - Upstep (2024)

Asked 3 years ago

One foot is fine, and the other is not. I'm concerned that if I wear orthotics/ custom insoles in both shoes that it will have side effects and be bad for my good foot, or vice versa.Does anyone here only wear one orthotic? Any suggestions?

When people experience pain in feet, it is usually in one foot, either on the right or left. However, you still would have to wear orthotics in both shoes to keep an equal balance. You won't be able to do regular activities like running, hiking, or even walking properly without the same balance in both feet.

Wearing just one orthotic is not advisable. It will reduce your balance and alter your body mechanics, causing postural changes that could potentially worsen your foot pain. It also places increased pressure on body parts like the knees and hips, leading to compensatory injuries in these areas. When you have a pair of custom orthotics made, especially from brands like Upstep, the podiatrist makes use that both feet are analyzed, and the orthotics are designed according to what each foot requires.

If you are also concerned about budget, I recommend getting a pair of custom orthotics from Upstep. They're more than 50% less expensive than other foot specialists, and the company gives you a 120 day money back guarantee. I hope this helps answer your question.

Custom orthotics are your best option if the shape and structure of the feet are different, requiring their own specifically designed insole. Over-the-counter insoles, which are identical between left and right, may not help you as they might not provide enough support for the foot that is giving you problems. Generally, wearing orthotics in one shoe is not advised, which can be mitigated by making use of custom orthotics.Increased support and shock absorption can be built into the orthotics to support your painful foot. Making sure you have adequate support for your foot that is worse can prevent complications from arising in the future. Doing it right can have great benefits on your day-to-day symptoms, leading you to live pain-free daily. Orthotics are cost effective and can be used between various shoes that you may have.

Wearing only an insole will affect your balance and alter your body mechanics, causing postural compensations and misalignment that could worsen foot pain. While your fear is not unfounded, the best way to deal with it is to get a custom insole as it factors in the pre-existing state of the feet.
