What defines a home? ›

Home is where you live: your house, apartment, or condo. It's also the place we feel most comfortable, loved, and protected — where we most feel at home. Home is many things to many people. It's the place you live, and the places you love: people might feel at home in a bookstore, a park, or certain cities.

The English word “home” is from the Old English word hām (not the pig) which actually refers to a village or estate where many “souls” are gathered. It implies there's a physical dwelling involved, but the main idea is that it's a gathering of people.

At Home was founded in 1979 in Schertz, Texas, as Garden Ridge Pottery and was later renamed to Garden Ridge. Investment firm Three Cities Research became the largest shareholder of Garden Ridge in 1999. Garden Ridge filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2004.

After a hive-minded alien race called the Boov conquer the Earth, they relocate the planet's human population -- all except for a little girl named Tip (Rihanna), who's managed to hide from the aliens. When Tip meets a fugitive Boov called Oh (Jim Parsons), there's mutual distrust. However, Oh is not like his comrades; he craves friendship and fun. House refers to a building in which someone lives. In contrast, a home can refer either to a building or to any location that a person thinks of as the place where she lives and that belongs to her.

A home is a physical domicile or structure in which a person or household resides. In a legal sense, a home is the place of permanent residency where one lives, or intends to return to live.

In the simplest case, you prove ownership of a house with a registered deed to the property that has your name on it.

The easy interpretation would be to equate our home with the space we live in. But a true home has a broader, spiritual connotation. It embodies a magical, intangible feeling of cosiness and familiarity that goes far beyond the four walls of our apartment flats.
