Homemade Dog Treats (1)

They say that a dog is a man’s best friend, I just think that they a humans best friend in general. We have a Beagle named Evy and she is the sweetest thing ever.

The only draw back is that she hates any dog treats that we buy from the store. Literally nothing will suit her needs! So for years we were buying Homemade Dog Treats from the farmers market.

The only bad thing was that we could only get them in the Spring and Summer months! Thank goodness it was my fiends mom and she so graciously gave me her recipe.

Now Evy is always is eating good and is constantly happy because these Homemade Dog Treats are super easy, and according to her super delicious.

WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:

  • You only need 4 ingredients.
  • It takes under 3o minutes from start to finish to make.
  • The recipe makes a bunch and can easily be doubled.

We like to give these out to all of our other dog parents around the block. They always appreciate them and their pups love them, so thats really all you can ask for!

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE DOG TREATS, STEP BY STEP:

Homemade Dog Treats (2)

  1. In large bowl add your flour, oats, pumpkin and peanut butter.
  2. Mix together using spatula or wooden spoon or by hand until all flour and oats are combined.
  3. Place dough on a floured cutting board.
  4. Using a rolling pin, roll your dough to about 1/4″ thickness.
  5. Using a dog treat cutter, or other cookie cutter cut out your treats.
  6. Place on parchment paper lined baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for 20 minutes.

See how easy these are! We love our dog bone cookie cutters, they come in all sizes so we can make as big or as small as we want, but you can use any cookie cutter you have.

I love that this uses 4 simple ingredients, whole wheat flour, quick cooking oats, peanut butter and pumpkin! We keep all of these on hand the majority of the time.

CAN YOU USE ALL-PURPOSE FLOUR?

Yes you can. If you don’t normally have whole wheat flour on hand you can substitute all-purpose for these Dog Treats.

The reason we use whole wheat is that it adds a little more nutritional value and the texture is a little thicker using that.

But it is not necessary that you use whole wheat and you can substitute if regular white flour is all that you have on hand.

IS PEANUT BUTTER GOOD FOR DOGS?

Generally speaking yes it is good for dogs. There are some ingredients that you do have to watch out for and one of those is xylitol.

Again, peanut butter is a good source of added nutrients such as protein and dogs absolutely love the taste of peanut butter, at least mine does.

HOW TO STORE:

To optimize the shelf life of your homemade dog treats then you will want to keep them refrigerated. They last longer, we we have had some start to mold when left out at room temperature.

Place your treats in ziptop baggies and store in the fridge, they should last you about two months. Not saying they “will” last you two months because dogs really love these!

CAN THESE BE FROZEN?

Absolutely. This is something we do often because we usually make a double batch when we do this and since this recipe alone makes about 3 dozen we come out with a lot.

You can store in airtight Tupperware or ziptop baggies and they can last anywhere from 6-8 months frozen.

To defrost just take out of the freezer and set in the refrigerator to soften, you can also let them defrost at room temperature, but this might build up condensation.

TIPS AND TRICKS:

  • If you don’t have whole wheat flour on hand, you can use all-purpose.
  • You can use old fashioned oats instead of quick cooking, we like quick cooking because they are smaller and don’t dry the treats out.
  • Make sure to check your peanut butter label to make sure that your type of peanut butter is safe for dogs.
  • Use the scraps and roll out again until all the scraps are used, this creates about 3 dozen dog treats.
  • You can freeze, see directions above.
  • You can use any cookie cutter you want,
  • These are soft baked treats, if you want crunchier treats leave in the oven for about 15-20 minutes longer.
