Wearing the right-sized shoes is so important – particularly for kids with growing feet. Equally, shoes that are too small can cause blisters, toenail damage, problems with healthy growth, and more! So, with that being said, finding a happy medium in a pair of shoes is what you should be aiming for.

You might only have a rough idea of yourself or your child’s shoe size – and that’s where measuring comes into play. Of course, you can always make use of our in-store measurement service , but measuring from the comfort of your own home is just as easy. Want to find out how to measure your shoe size at home? Keep on reading!

How to measure your foot size

From the width of your feet to the size of your foot’s arch, there are plenty of different measurements that you can take. But the great news is, when measuring to find your shoe size, all you really need to know is the basics!

As long as you know the length of your feet, you’ll be well on your way to finding your shoe size, and ultimately your perfect-fitting pair of shoes. Whether you’re measuring your own feet or your little one’s feet, follow these simple tips below:

Kids

  • Place your child’s foot on a flat surface, making sure that their heel is resting against a straight edge (such as a wall or table leg)

  • Using a ruler, measure from the back of the heel to the tip of your child’s longest toe (usually their big toe, but not always!)

  • Make sure you measure both feet, as they may differ in size.

  • Record your measurements and consult our fit guide to suss out your size

Adults

Measuring your own feet is just as easy as measuring someone else’s. Follow the same steps as above on your own foot, making sure to write down your measurements so that you don’t forget. If you find it a struggle to measure your own foot, why not ask someone to help?

How to measure your shoe width

While it’s not always necessary to know the width of your foot, it’s a pretty easy practice for those who are curious!

Begin by wrapping a tape measure around the widest part of your foot (make sure you don’t have any socks on, as this will affect your measurements.) Place the foot you’re measuring on the ground and put weight on it, so you’re standing normally. You can then take your measurement in millimeters from the tape measure.

How to find out your shoe size

Now you've measured your feet, it’s time to find out what your shoe size is. Use Clarks’ handy shoe size charts to identify your size; simply find your foot length on the table (in the right-hand column) and move your finger along to the left to find your US shoe size. Testing your new shoe fit

You’ve measured your feet and identified your foot size, and now it’s time for the exciting part: shoe shopping. It’s important that your shoes are the right size for you without feeling too big or too small.

Trying on your shoes in-store is the best way to quickly get a feel of what they’re going to be like. Practice walking up and down wearing your new shoes to figure out how comfortable they are. Pay attention to the fit of the shoe; they should feel supportive but not too tight!

Breaking in new shoes

As long as you’re selecting the right size for your feet, you shouldn’t expect to have too many issues with your new shoes in terms of discomfort. Our shoes are designed with innovative technologies for the best comfort and support. However, sometimes a new pair of shoes requires a little breaking in, so here’s how you can do it:

  • Break in your shoes slowly - if you’re planning on wearing your shoes to a big event or for a long period of time, build up to the day by breaking your shoes in slowly. Wear them around the house until you feel confident that you’re not going to get struck down by blisters while you’re out

  • If your shoes have laces, tie them tightly - it’s tempting to have your shoes a little looser while you’re breaking them in, but tying them tightly will help to speed up the breaking-in process

  • Wear thick socks - if blisters are an issue, pick out your coziest pair of socks and slip them on under your shoes. Bonus points if you brave a grocery shop in your fluffy sock and new sandal ensemble

Generally speaking, a new pair of shoes should start to feel completely comfortable after around three to four weeks of breaking them in. This often varies depending on the style of shoe and material it’s made from. If your shoes don’t feel comfortable after the four-week mark, you may have picked up the wrong-sized shoes for your feet, in which case it’s best to return them and try another size.

Now you are equipped with the knowledge of your exact shoe size, it’s time to find your perfect pair of shoes!
