Something I have plentiful in my closet are fitted tank tops. It’s part of my personal capsule wardrobe. They’re great basics, go with so much, and are easy to style in my opinion. I have lots of really simple ones like ribbed tank tops, to just cotton tanks. Racer backs, to spaghetti strap. So many different necklines too. I haven’t met a tank top I don’t love really. I think these are a great option as they create balance in outfits with more voluminous bottoms. Think your wide leg jeans, relaxed denim, flowy skirts and the like. This is the perfect way to create balance.
And you’re probably wondering, why not just wear a bodysuit? Well, guess what, I hate a bodysuit. I have a long torso and don’t enjoy thongs, so these are usually a hard no for me. I haven’t even attempted to find ones because I just don’t think it’s worth my time. So this is why I love a fitted tank because they give you that clean tucked in look without bunching and without having to unsnap or get undressed to use the bathroom. Team fitted tank over here!
Pair With More Voluminous or Oversized Pieces
Adding a fitted tank to a flowy maxi skirt, or really wide leg jeans, is the perfect way to create balance. A super tight fitted tank paired with skinny jeans is just, a lot. If you want to do this, I’d just add an oversized layer over it. All about pairing fitted with relaxed for perfect harmony.
Get The Right Size Tank
When you’re thinking how tight should tanks be, they shouldn’t pull! Not all tanks are meant to be fitted so don’t just buy smaller sizes. We don’t want the fabric to pull in our bust either. It’s not a good look.
Play With Color And Textures For The Season
You can truly wear a tank any time of year. With varying climates and just being hot blooded, you may want to wear a tank in the fall and winter. Which you can. But let’s keep colors, fabrics and textures in mind too. Sweater tanks for fall and winter, cotton and linen ones for spring and summer. But you can also play with fun colors and textures. So many great ribbed textured tanks that feel more interesting than a plain cotton one. This can help to add interest to an outfit and make your tanks feel less boring.

Pair With Wide Leg Cropped Jeans
This is one of my go-to outfits. My favorite wide leg crop pants (I have lots of options and outfit ideas here) are what I tend to grab the most. Especially in the late summer, early fall. It’s a good way to wear your new bottoms without sweating. A good trick for figuring out how to dress for fall when it’s still hot out. To take today’s look even more into fall, I’d just swap out accessories. Change the straw bag for a leather one. And for shoes, change out the espadrilles for a leather sandal or mule or leather sneaker.
Fitted Tanks With Relaxed Jean Shorts
When it’s hot as hell in the South, this is my go-to outfit. I’d leave the super short jean shorts in the closet (or maybe let’s donate them) and stick to a longer inseam high rise mom jean short. It’s a great balance. Add a leather belt to make this outfit feel a bit more elevated.
Fitted Tanks To The Office
While I know you maybe can’t wear a tank to the office, I feel like more workplaces are becoming a bit more lenient with women’s dress codes these days. I’d stick to super wide straps, and more classic knits. And if you need to, just throw a third piece over it. You still get the effect of the fitted top paired with a trouser that looks great.
Sweater Tanks For Fall And Winter
I LOVE my sweater tank for fall and winter. As someone who is insanely hot-blooded, I really appreciate this trend. It let’s me wear a sweater without dying from being overheated all the time. It also makes fall layering less bulky. You can pair your fitted sweater tank with a menswear blazer or chunky cardigan and not feel like you’re adding tons of bulk.
Dressy Fitted Tanks With Jeans
For something that feels a little dressier, I love a nicer fitted tank like this style from Reformation. Paired with all my straight leg denim, this is a favorite outfit combination. These can also act as a Going Out Top™ for spring and summer too without having to buy new pieces.
Where To Shop For Fitted Tanks
I have found so many of my favorite fitted tanks at a few stores. My go-to ribbed high neck cotton tanks are from Banana Republic as seen paired with my denim cut-offs. I probably wear those the most. The price point is a bit high for just a standard tank (I mean, just $30), but trust me when I tell you it is so good. It washes really well, doesn’t stretch out while you wear it thanks to a little spandex, and they’re just a great basic. They’re so easy to style and I just wear a regular bra with it and don’t even care about the straps. I have them in tons of colors. If you want something cheaper, these from Target are identical and on sale for $6.
Abercrombie & Fitch is another favorite. They have lots of options that feel a little more exciting than just a regular old tank like the green one featured in today’s post. A&F also has these great little sets of three. I love this one for a minimal look.
Reformation is my go-to when I want something a little nicer. This bow detail tank is a favorite of mine and I love to pair it with denim. They also have ribbed wide strap tanks that are great and can easily be dressed up or down. With Reformation, I always recommend to size up on anything super fitted.
