What is the average salary for a doctor on Medscape? ›

The report reveals that total physician compensation experienced a modest 3% growth, increasing from an average of $352,000 to $363,000 in 2023. Notably, specialized doctors earned $117,000 more on average than their primary care counterparts.

To access MGMA salary data, organizations need to become members. There are several MGMA membership types available. Those who contribute to the survey receive single-user access to the dataset that they submitted through the MGMA DataDive.

With over 100,000 physicians contributing to the most comprehensive set of salary questions, Medscape's annual Physician Compensation Survey is the gold standard for physician salary information across the United States.

In last year's report, cardiologists' average income was $490,000.

MGMA data meets the majority of aforementioned standards for high-quality compensation data, and it is the source most widely-referenced by physician employers. The data is derived from surveys submitted by those employers, and the latest report is usually available around June of each year.

In this year's report, internists' average annual income was $273,000, which is in the bottom six of the 29 specialties polled and is a 4% decrease from 2022. However, since 2015, the average annual reported salary of internists has increased approximately 39%.

According to Salary.com, a trauma surgeon's average annual salary in the United States is $420,464. Medscape does not specify a reported annual salary for trauma surgeons but has a reported salary of general surgery at $402,000.
