How did certain candies get their names?
3 Musketeers: In 1932, there were three flavors —chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Eventually, the vanilla and strawberry flavors disappeared.
Airheads: Steve Bruner invented the candy and he believed it took a generation for a candy name to become part of our culture.He didn’t want to wait that long. He asked his children, “What would you call your friend who did something silly?” and one of them said,“Airhead.”
Dum-Dums: The Spangler Candy Company makes Dum-dums and chose the word because it was something any child could say.
Hershey’s Kisses: A century ago, a kiss was a generic term for any number of small piece of candy. When Hershey’s came out with its product, it was a natural generic name but as years went by and “kiss” lost this meaning, Hershey’s was able to grab control over the name.
Life Savers: The name comes from the fact that they look like life preservers but it’s not true they have a hole in the middle to prevent a choking death.
Milky Way: The original focus of the Milky Way was about how “milky” it was, especially milkier than a malted milk you could get at a soda fountain.
Mr. Goodbar: Hershey’s chemists were working on a new peanut candy bar.As they were testing it, someone said, “That’s a good bar.”
Skittles: Came from Great Britain. “Skittles” is a type of bowling. Life should be “beer and skittles.”So the name of the candy means fun.
Sour Patch Kids: They were named after the popular ’80s craze of the Cabbage Patch Kids.
Twix: We’re not sure but take your pick — it’s a combination oftwin and sticks or possibly twin and mix.
