Air Fryer Scones

Well, you can’t take Yorkshire out of the girl.

I grew up in a small seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England. The town was (and still is) loaded with lots of similar places to eat out. Local fish and chip shops, local carvery restaurants and of course plenty of tearooms that sell scones and tea for brunch or afternoon tea.

My grandad would take me to his favourite tearooms, and it was wonderful to enjoy a scone together and enjoy each other’s company. It was on a cobbled street that was often used for filming vintage TV shows and even though it was great value for money and never expensive, it always felt like an expensive treat.

Sadly, my grandad died several years ago, but my grandma’s favourite scone recipe does live on and when I bought my first air fryer many years ago, I was soon baking my grandma’s scone recipe in the air fryer.

Today we are going to be showing you scones in air fryer, how long to cook scones in air fryer, the best scone mix recipe, what temperature to cook scones in air fryer and so much more.

Beyond our scones in air fryer, we have many more baking ideas for you to try including: air fryer rock cakes, air fryer cake, air fryer fat rascal, air fryer tea loaf and lets not forget about air fryer Victoria sandwich

Can I Make Scones With Plain Flour?

No, its not recommended to make scones with plain flour or with all purpose flour. Instead, you need to make scones with self raising flour, or in the USA what they call self rising flour. This is because you need your scones to rise, and instead they will be like pancakes.

Scone Dough

What I love about our scone dough is that it’s the perfect basic scone recipe that become your go to for so many different air fryer scone recipes.

For example, you can just make a simple change and you have air fryer cheese scones, or air fryer fruit scones, or even cranberry scones or air fryer cinnamon scones for Christmas.

When experimenting with scones in the air fryer, I recommend you try out a few different flavour combinations. Then when you do add 28g or 1oz of your favourite extra ingredient for the best air fryer scone recipe for the season.

For example, your scones made in the air fryer could be:

  • Air Fryer Blueberry Scones

  • Air Fryer Strawberry Scones
  • Air Fryer Fruit Scones
  • Air Fryer Cheese Scones

After you have rubbed your fat into your flour and before adding the milk, mix in your extras. Such as 28g grated cheddar cheese for cheese scones, or 28g of raisins for fruit scones.

Flour – For the best results use a quality self raising flour. Try not to go too cheap as it will show in your scones.

Butter – Any butter will do and get it out of the fridge an hour before baking, that way it will be easier for you to rub your butter into your flour.

Milk. When baking scones, it is the milk that helps combine the dough and make that creamy delicious scone texture. You can also use buttermilk too if you prefer. Do avoid low fat milk though as it will not produce quality scones.

Egg Wash. To get that golden glow on your scones you will need to add egg wash to your scones. Though ours are overly golden because we let our little ones loose with the egg wash and they don’t have a limit.

Extras. You can also add in extras such as dried fruit, cheese, or just keep it simple with some caster sugar.

Then for the kitchen gadgets that we have used in this air fryer scone recipe, it has just been our Philips Air Fryer. We have this one and its wonderful for air fryer baking, as well as for other air fryer classics.

I love to serve my scones with strawberries, strawberry jam and cream. I am a strawberry addict, and nothing beats strawberries being cooked this way.

Traditional. Note that this is a traditional British scones recipe from the 1960’s and you are welcome to modernise them if you prefer.

What flour is best for scones? ›

Bread flour has too much gluten for a tender scone, and cake flour may not have enough. Pastry flour might work, but I find AP to be the most flexible, and most times it's the least expensive as well. Scones are best mixed by hand. Combine dry ingredients, then in a separate bowl, combine wet.

Should you chill scone dough before baking? ›

As previously mentioned, it's crucial to keep the dough cold so that the butter doesn't melt before the scones are baked. Using cold ingredients helps, but your hands can warm up the dough when you're working with it. For extra precaution, it helps to chill the dough again before it's baked.

How long should you rest scones before baking? ›

Recipes for scones sometimes provide a make-ahead option that involves refrigerating the dough overnight so it can simply be shaped and then popped into the oven the next day. But now we've found that resting the dough overnight has another benefit: It makes for more symmetrical and attractive pastries.

Is buttermilk or cream better for scones? ›

Heavy Cream or Buttermilk: For the best tasting pastries, stick with a thick liquid such as heavy cream or buttermilk. I usually use heavy cream, but if you want a slightly tangy flavor, use buttermilk.

How to get scones to rise higher? ›

To ensure taller scones, start with a thicker dough disc and place the scones on a tray with sides, allowing them to slightly touch one another. This arrangement encourages the scones to push against the pan and each other, promoting height.

How thick should you roll out scone dough? ›

It is far better that the scone mixture is on the wet side, sticking to your fingers, as the scones will rise better. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and flatten it out with your hand, or use a rolling pin, to a thickness of 1-2 cm (1/2 – ¾ inch).

Should you refrigerate scones? ›

Home-made scones generally last 1-2 days stored in an airtight container and placed in a kitchen cupboard or larder. Any longer and they can become a bit dry. If storing scones in the fridge they will last for about a week.

What happens if you put too much baking powder in scones? ›

Too much baking powder can cause the batter to be bitter tasting. It can also cause the batter to rise rapidly and then collapse. (i.e. The air bubbles in the batter grow too large and break causing the batter to fall.) Cakes will have a coarse, fragile crumb with a fallen center.

How to tell when scones are done? ›

Gently tap a scone to check if it's cooked through. If it's ready, it should sound hollow.

Why don t my scones rise high? ›

The longer you get the dough sit before baking it, the less your scones will rise. Try to bake the dough as soon as you finishing kneading and rolling it out. Letting the mixture sit too long will cause the gas bubbles from the leavening agent to disappear. These gas bubbles are what help the scones rise.

For a conventional oven, set the temperature to 350 degrees. Then, bake your full size scones for 35-40 minutes, until they are golden brown along the edges. If you are using a convection oven, set the temperature to 325 degrees and bake your full size scones for 14-20 minutes.
