When selecting your vest, it is recommended to factor in both your "waist size" and "jacket size". For most gentleman, "jacket size" is a good guide to use. However, if you have an athletic build with a small waist, you may want to order based on your waist size. For example, suppose you wear a 42R jacket, but you only have a 32 waist. In this case, the size "Small" would work better for you. For less-athletic gentleman who have "larger bellies", you also want to factor in your waist measurement. For example, suppose you wear a size 50 coat with a 48 waist size. If you go based on just jacket size, the size XL may be be your initial selection. However, with the 48" waist size, a size 2XL vest would be a more comfortable fit in this case.

Measure across the chest, just below the armpits. Double the measure across the chest, giving the actual chest size of your garment. Compare the chest size of your garment with the sizes in the chart (inches or centimeters)
Most vests will taper slightly at the bottom (1-2”). In most cases you can order a size that is 1-2" larger than your chest measurement. Consider what you will wear under the vest and how you prefer the fit (slim tapering or full cut).
If you are ordering a modern jacket, you should order the same size vest. For example, if you order a Modern 42 Long Jacket, you would want a 42 Tall vest.
And when it comes to vests, I personally feel like a little bigger is better than a little too small, since for me vests are all about layering. This is why with this particular design, if you find yourself in-between 2 sizes, I suggest sizing up.
Vests that are too big or too small can be uncomfortable to wear and impede movement. To find the right size, measure around the chest and waist and consult the sizing chart on the product page.
Make sure there is no excess room above the openings and that the jacket does not ride up over the chin or face. The vest should fit like a second skin and should always remain flush to the body.
40 actually stands for the circ*msize of the collor which is in this case 40cm. But it also means the torso of a size 40 shirt is medium sized. Question: Is shirt size 40 medium or large? Answer: A shirt with size 40 corresponds to shirt size medium in the international scale.
Broadly speaking, anything below 32 would be considered XS, below 36 would be S, below 40 would be M, below 46 would be L, below 50 would be XL, and below 5" would be XXL. Transition zones, where you may be an M or an L, say, occur at 34, 36, 38, 42, 46, and 50.
It should fully cover the entire waistband of the trouser and never let any shirt fabric show in between. This means the trousers also need to be sitting on the natural waist. Gentlemen often leave the last button of a waistcoat unfastened to allow more room at the hips for movement and sitting.
