It wasn’t too long ago that the only fruit available in the supermarkets were those that were grown locally and in season. Fast forward to today & you can now go to almost any store to pick up tropical fruits like mangos, avocados, passion fruit, dragon fruit and melons at all times of the year.

The benefits of shopping and eating fruit that is in season.

Not only does shopping locally and seasonally benefit Ireland’s farmers and growers, it also benefits us! Have you ever had a fresh Wexford strawberry in June and another in December? Did you even know when some of the best Irish fruit you can have is in season?

The flavour of in-season fruit will always outperform those that are being forced to grow in climates that they are not used to.

However, fruit flavour is not the only benefit of knowing what fruit is in season:

  • Using fresh and in-season fruit is also better for our health due to the much higher nutritional value of the fruit.
  • In-season fruit also allows us to incorporate vitamins and minerals into our diet that we might not get the rest of the year.
  • Farmers would have an abundance of produce when the fruit is in season, meaning it would cost us less to buy.
  • Buying local or in-season fruit reduces carbon footprint and is generally kinder to the planet.

Although our climate doesn’t allow us to grow some of our favourite fruits such as bananas, we are very lucky to be living in a country that does grow some exceptional produce, and we should embrace that! We are the first to admit that it isn’t always realistic or even possible to be eating locally and seasonally all the time, but that doesn’t mean we can’t try. With a name like The Fruit People, we feel a duty to share some of our expert knowledge on Irish fruit with you through this blog.
